In the commentaries to this book we try to understand d’Alembert thoughts and how he contrives to translate his ideas on mechanics to the fluid realm with a new and radical point of view; how he arrives at the first two fundamental differential equations among the velocity components; and how he tries to reduce the resistance of a moving body, which is a change of its momentum, to the hydrostatical pressure, which is related to the gravity. All this knowing that (...) his mechanics has no forces and no pressures as well, and that the fluids are aggregates of individual particles. The essay A New Theory of the Resistance of Fluids was a turning point in Fluid Mechanics because clearly, for the first time, the resistance is shown as the results of a fluid subjected to differential equations in a continuous mode instead of a set of impacts of individual particles. This contribution has been recognized by the scholars. However, only partial attention has been p aid to this work, which can be justified due to the difficulty in its reading and also because it was eclipsed by the publication, a few years later, of Euler’s three Memoirs that established modern hydrodynamics. Summary This article intends to propose new hypotheses concerning the origin of the ?Principe général? of mechanics of Jean Le Rond D'Alembert expressed in its Traité de dynamique in 1743. The examination of the statics of Pierre Varignon and its inheritance suggests that D'Alembert retains, through a case of oblique collision on a hard surface, a method of decomposition and equilibrium of forces which is close to its principle. On the other hand, this principle requires a definition of (...) the equilibrium widely spread in the 17th and 18th centuries, D'Alembert seeming then more to innovate from an epistemological point of view that on a technical one. Finally, the determination of rules of collision based at the same time on decompositions of movements at the level of the centre of mass and on appeal to a principle of relativity constitutes a know-how at the beginning of the 18th century which can be moved closer to methods developed by D'Alembert. These three aspects try then to replace the science of D'Alembert in a context by insisting on the essential role of the collisions of body and on that of the notion of equilibrium concerning the birth of its principle. La tradition philosophique occidentale recèle des propos éthiques inouïs. Etrangement, ces propos ont été articulés par des penseurs que l'on a souvent considérés comme des "hérétiques" et qui, pour cette raison, ont été diffamés. ostracisés, condamnés, voire exécutés. Héraclite, Socrate, Epicure, Eckhart, Spinoza, Wittgenstein, Arendt et quelques autres exclus ont prononcé des paroles qui n'ont pas été entendues. Sans doute parce qu'elles étaient "hérétiques", c'est-à-dire inaudibles par les pouvoirs en place qu'elles mettaient en cause, directement ou indirectement. Le mot français (...) "hérésie" vient d'une racine grecque qui connote la décision et la pensée. Un hairetikos est quelqu'un qui pense par lui-même et décide de façon autonome. On perçoit immédiatement le renversement sémantique qui caractérise le sens de ce mot, depuis l'Inquisition jusqu'à nos jours, où il désigne plutôt un "déviant", un mouton noir dans un troupeau de moutons blancs, un empêcheur de tourner en rond, un gêneur, un dissident, voire un séditieux. Ce sont pourtant ces "hérétiques" qui ont pensé la nécessité de substituer en éthique l'inclusion à l'exclusion. Une étrange surdité s'est structurée ù travers les siècles ù l'égard de leurs contributions les plus décisives. L'ouvrage tente de dégager des archives de notre culture quelques éléments d'une éthique de l'inclusion. Les éléments demeurés inouïs nous permettraient sans doute, si nous les entendions, de trouver comment surmonter les crises qui nous assaillent de toutes parts. (shrink)

En confrontant la dialectique hégélienne et la dialectique hamelinienne sur le rapport du nombre à la suite des notions et des concepts, nous poursuivons un triple dessein, que nous nous permettrons d'indiquer de façon très schématique. Nous voudrions: 1 ° contribuer à dégager l'histoire de la philosophie de considérations strictement érudites ou herméneutiques, qui tournent indéfiniment en rond sur elles-mêmes à l'intérieur d'un même auteur pris pour prétexte; car en établissant un dialogue entre philosophes nous mettons en relief leur (...) philosophie, parce que nous rétablissons l'ordination de cette dernière à son objet, la vérité, et en l'occurrence nous pratique-rons — selon notre mesure — une méthode dont Hegel lui-même, pour ne rien dire d'Hamelin, a donné un magistral exemple; 2° mon-trer qu'une pensée dialectique a des ressources propres non seulement pour le traitement des catégories en général, mais aussi pour celui des catégories logico-mathématiques fondamentales, et en particulier à l'endroit du concept qui a suscité à la fin du siècle dernier, on le sait, la rénovation des mathématiques et de la logique; car Hegel et Hamelin peuvent nous apprendre sur le nombre ce qu'on trouverait difficilement chez Frege, Russell ou Peano: le rapport du nombre aux autres catégories de la pensée; 3° montrer réciproquement que la philosophie du nombre constitue une pièce essentielle dans les deux dialectiques, dont elle exprime pour une large part la divergence, puisqu'elle installe celle d'Hamelin dans le fini, tandis qu'elle confirme l'orientation de celle de Hegel vers l'infini. Il semble que, surtout dans les pays de langue anglaise influencés par un idéal industriel, un assez grand nombre de phi-losophes, nouveaux Pygmalions sans le savoir, aient caressé le rêve pourtant glacial d'une logique toute mécanique, qui organiserait le savoir en se substituant à la pensée. Le désir de transporter en philosophie les victotres sans réplique du calcul et de la technicité, où le génie humain se dissimule mais se sent sûr de soi comme un dieu, le culte de l'objectivité (...) rationnelle joint au scepticisme sur l'Esprit et à ce genre d'aversion qu'on pourrait appeler misopsychie, car il s'y mêle la crainte de l'erreur et l'antipathie pour les royaumes du coeur ou de l'imaginaire, ont contribué à enfanter et à répandre, entre autres choses, ce nouveau « rêve de pierre » hélas sans beauté! Que serait une « science sans conscience »? N'est-ce pas là une notion aussi contradictoire, et même dont 1'objet s'avère plus radicalement impossible, que celle d'un carré-rond? Néan-moins quand on parcourt la litterature contemporaine sur le sujet, on serait en droit de conclure qu'un assez grand nombre de philosophies, qui cependant passent leurs journées ou leurs veilles à s'in-terroger sur les conditions de la science, ont cessé de se le demander. Qui aurait pu croire, au début des années 1970, quand des milliers de prêtres décidaient de quitter l’Église, que Jean Cardonnel lui demeurerait fidèle? Le plus rebelle des dominicains de l’époque avait derrière lui un passé de provocateur et de protestataire (contre la condamnation des prêtres ouvriers, contre la torture en Algérie et la colonisation, puis à la pointe des mouvements des années 68...), il s’affirmait alors admirateur de la révolution culturelle chinoise, et n’avait pas l’intention de baisser la (...) garde face à la censure et aux tracasseries ecclésiales. Qui aurait pu parier qu’un quart de siècle plus tard, cet empêcheur de s’ennuyer en rond, qui disait avoir « épousé la Parole du tribun Jésus », ne s’en serait pas éloigné d’un pouce? (shrink)

En mai 2007, une «table ronde» s’est tenue, au Collège International de Philosophie à Paris, autour de l’ouvrage de Pierre Magnard Pourquoi la religion?. Dans un texte récapitulatif, l’auteur du livre, spécialiste de la pensée de la Renaissance, montre les enjeux spéculatifs et pratiques de son approche de la religion, tout en exposant comment celle-ci se déploie dans la «marche» des hommes, en souci de leur humanisation. Si la religion – terme qu’il faut entendre ici au singulier – fait oeuvre (...) de reliaison, apportant sa contribution au fondement du lien social, n’est-ce pas en raison de sa vertu déliante: «seule la religion rassemble dûment, car elle seule est capable de délier»? Jean Leclercq donne une présentation des lignes de faîte de l’ouvrage, ce qui permet d’en prendre une première connaissance et de suivre les trois lectures, accompagnées de questionnements, que proposent ensuite, selon des perspectives différentes et complémentaires, Bernard Bourgeois, Thierry Gontier et Christian Trottmann. Résumé La réception des Lumières en République démocratique allemande (RDA) était particulière. D’une part, la tradition marxiste a découvert la pensée matérialiste dans l’histoire des idées allemande et a reproché à juste titre à la « bourgeoisie idéaliste » de l’avoir marginalisée. D’autre part, l’usage dogmatique de l’ouvrage de Lénine concernant l’épistémologie de Ernst Mach, Matérialisme et empiriocriticisme, empêcha d’apprécier convenablement des penseurs importants comme Jean Le Rond D’Alembert. De plus, la structure répressive de la vie académique en (...) RDA a paralysé la renaissance de la pensée matérialiste. Au lieu de se consacrer aux conditions concrètes de la production du savoir, la pensée matérialiste était entravée par l’obligation de recourir à l’interprétation économique. (shrink)

This paper is a first attempt to study the problem of aggregation of individual ordinal probabilistic beliefs in an Arrowian framework. We exhibit some properties an aggregation rule must fulfil; in particular we prove the existence of a “quasi-dictator”.

This paper examines Jean le Rond d’Alembert’s views of metaphysical cosmology and argues that these constitute an important context for Kant’s critical-period response to rational cosmology. D’Alembert is commonly taken to have dismissed cosmology from the roster of the legitimate sciences, and there is indeed evidence of his scepticism towards Maupertuis’ cosmology no less than towards Wolff’s cosmologia generalis. I argue, however, that a broadly Leibnizian cosmological perspective underpins d’Alembert’s accounts of our knowledge and of the task of (...) the philosopher. D’Alembert’s work thus anticipates and helps bring into focus Kant’s own nuanced engagement with the cosmological tradition. (shrink)

La démocratie contemporaine, aux yeux des peuples et des cultures d'aujourd'hui, souffre d'une crise de crédibilité. Pour qui croit encore aux principes et idéaux de la démocratie, la compréhension de cette crise est une urgence intellectuelle et pratique de notre temps. L'essai présenté ici est un effort soutenu dans ce sens. Or comprendre cette crise, c'est d'abord comprendre les fondements des principes et des valeurs qui font de la "thèse démocratique" une thèse défendable, sur le registre de la raison critique, (...) mais aussi, et surtout, de l'expérience. Et l'expérience, précisément, nous fournit-elle une image cohérente du fonctionnement démocratique réel de nos sociétés? Dans la sphère économique, les rapports de pouvoir sont-ils aussi démocratiques que dans la sphère politique? D'où la question centrale : la démocratie peut-elle être fondée universellement, à tous les niveaux de l'organisation sociale? (shrink)

Selon la philosophe américaine Lydia Goehr, l’idéal romantique de « l’œuvre d’art totale » ( Gesamtkunstwerk ) fraye la voie d’un « formalisme transcendentalement élargi » ( transcendentally enhanced formalism ) capable de procurer « un usage contemporain renouvelé et acceptable » aux termes des premières revendications formalistes d’autonomie. Nous soutenons que le type de formalisme défendu par Goehr est incapable de rendre compte du sens inédit dans lequel la musique moderniste atteint à l’autonomie. Elle n’y atteint, ni en demeurant (...) confinée à l’intérieur des limites de son médium (comme le voudrait un formalisme étriqué), ni en faisant signe vers l’extramusical gisant au-delà de ces limites (comme le voudrait le formalisme élargi), mais en dissolvant l’apparence même selon laquelle ses ressources expressives seraient limitées a priori. L’autonomie revendiquée par le modernisme passe par une émancipation de la composition à l’égard de toute norme préexistante. (shrink)
